Reiki, energy, what?
If you’ve done de-armouring with me, then perhaps you already know that it incorporates elements of energy work, otherwise known as ‘hand-waving,’ ‘hands-on healing,’ ‘Reiki healing,’ or whatever else you may want to call it. Alternative though it may be, and all by itself rarely enough, it’s a very useful addition to many forms of therapeutic practice.
To me, energy healing is a natural complement to de-armouring. During a de-armouring session, I encourage energy to move where your body needs it, sensing this energy in much the same way as I sense which de-armouring points to select, and in the same way as I sense how long to hold them until there is release (emotional, pain, or energetic). In other words, much of this work is very intuitive, and in response to what I see/sense occurring for the person receiving.
What is energy healing?
Most will know of ‘energy’ work from the tradition of Reiki healing. Originally from Japan, Reiki has become synonomous with the laying on of hands to channel ‘universal’ healing energies. The concept is that all people have an electromagnetically significant life force energy in their body (often called chi), and this energy permeates all of creation, and is necessary for life. The human body can have depleted life force energy due to illness or stress.
Thing is, it works. I can’t personally give you a scientific explanation as it’s something my clients and I simply experience (including the results). Barbara Brennan, who wrote the classic guide to energy healing, Hands of Light, says this about the nature of universal energy:
Through experiments over the past few decades physicists have discovered matter to be completely mutable into other particles or energy and vice-versa and on a subatomic level, matter does not exist with certainty in definite places, but rather shows ‘tendencies’ to exist. Quantum physics is beginning to realise that the Universe appears to be a dynamic web of interconnected and inseparable energy patterns. If the universe is indeed composed of such a web, there is logically no such thing as a part. This implies we are not separated parts of a whole but rather we are the Whole.
In the sense of all being interconnected, any person with practice can use their hands as a means of channeling energy and bringing healing. Of course, the more one practices, and the more feedback one receives, the more one is able to hone this ability.
In my work, I use energy healing to complement de-armouring in a number of ways, including processes, for example, to clean up your energetic body, cut cords, and a few other totally ‘woo woo’ things that are, experientially and practically, effective.
Energy work is helpful for healing in many contexts. As I have worked with quite a bit of sexual dysfunction, I can tell you that for those who have suffered sexual abuse and who experience numbness or erectile issues, focusing on the groin and lower abdominal area can help with sensation (always in conjunction with other bodywork, though).
However, there are limits to its effectiveness.
Energy healing can be a band-aid
A helpful one, of course. Possibly a very healing and energizing one. But if you use energy healing to deal with longstanding issues, without addressing the cause of the issues, you might find the results short-lived.
This is because many issues you present with (circumstances in your life which you wish to change, including illness) can be the result of ingrained patterns (ways of being in your lifestyle, health, behavior, or mindset), and if you don’t address the underlying causes, energy work will only act as a temporary relief of symptoms.
Therefore, I find energy healing is more powerful with bodywork, and ‘change-work’ modalities like NLP or hypnotherapy (both of which I do). ‘Change-work modalities’ are tools that help your body and brain change the way they behave, react, and experience reality. Change-work is more than just feeling heard, understood, and achieving self-understanding. Change-work is about … changing! For many, this means achieving goals and experiencing transformation in some area of their life.
If you receive energy healing along with change-work, then it can serve a very powerful purpose and it has a greater chance of creating long-term positive effects.
